THE DISTRICT OFFICE SUMMER HOURS ARE

Second Grade Writing
Instructor: Mrs. Samantha DuKavas
†At Highland Elementary, we use the Every Child a Writer (ECAW) curriculum. †It uses a demonstrated (whole group), differentiated (small group, teacher led), and directed (independent) approach to teach writing.†

ECAW uses a small group approach. †Students will rotate through stations which will include a station with me (differentiated instruction), directed (independent work), a center, and spelling/grammar. †In the differentiated group, I will teach students specific targets or goals that they need. †Then they will continue that work in the independent portion of the stations. †Targets or goals we will work on in second grade include creating a writing plan, using proper sentence/paragraph structure, staying on topic, using a detail as the subject, spelling words correctly, using noun modifiers (adjectives), and revising and editing their work to publish. †

Our center will include literacy based activities. †These will be a range of things such as games (bingo, matching, I Have, Who Has), creative writing prompts, or reading. †We also have 6†iPads†in our classroom that were purchased through a grant and by the Highland PTO; students use learning apps to reinforce our reading and writing programs.

The other station students will do during our rotations is a spelling/grammar station. †Students will do activities that will help them learn their spelling list and practice specific grammar skills.† Grammar skills that we will focus on are capitalizing proper nouns, subject/verb agreement, punctuation, dates, plural nouns, and contractions. Check out the spelling class page for other activities you can do with your child to help them learn their spelling words!
